Happy Friday!

It remains a busy time for me with my new solo play, "Grandma & Me: An Ode to Single Parents," continuing to go great guns! The show has been extended through November 19 at the Marsh in San Francisco with shows at 7:30 on Fridays and 5 PM on Saturdays. It’s been really heartening (and humbling) to hear single parents tell me their own tales of taking on “the toughest job there is” all alone and somehow persevering. I’m hearing from parents currently on the journey, as well as those who have already survived their trials by fire and raised happy, healthy, productive adults. They tell me that my story encapsulates the highs, lows, fears and triumphs of their own experiences. I’m glad that I apparently got it right!

We’re noticing that a lot of people who work with single parent families such as therapists, counselors and social workers coming to the shows and sending their clients so that they can either commiserate or, if they haven’t yet embarked upon the journey, get a glimpse of what lies ahead. To aid in this work, the Marsh and I are giving free tickets to all performances to those who work with single parents. Sins of Our Mother

I’ve been following the strange story of Lori Vallow, dubbed “the Doomsday Mom” by the press, since first seeing a profile of the case on Dateline several months ago. Vallow is the mother whose children, aged 7 and 16, dropped from sight and she refused to produce them for authorities or tell anyone where they were. Their bodies were eventually found buried in the backyard of a home owned by her fifth husband, Chad Daybell. Vallow and Daybell are currently awaiting trial on first degree murder and conspiracy charges. They are also believed to be responsible for the deaths of Vallow’s fourth husband and Daybell’s first wife.

It’s a creepy story of murder, religious fanaticism and Doomsday prophesies. It’s a very disturbing three episode watch that I highly recommend.

Vatican Girl: The Disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi

NETFLIX

In 1983, 15-year-old Emanuela Orlandi, a resident of the Vatican, disappeared on her way home from a music lesson, never to be seen again. This documentary looks at the disappearance as well as the false leads and factual revelations that have come to light over the last 40 years. The four-part series plays like something out of The Da Vinci Code, with several tantalizing breadcrumbs that lead to the front door of the papacy itself. There is a strong case made that every pope since John Paul II, the pope when Emanuela vanished, to Pope Francis knows what happened to the girl and where her remains are today. As a practicing Catholic, I found the allegations disturbing. If those close to the pope, or Pope Francis himself, knows what happened to Emanuela, they need to give her family some closure before her 92-year-old mother passes away. Watch and you decide which theory, if any, you think provides the best explanation for the disappearance of the teenager.

Rachel Maddow Presents: ULTRA

With armed right-wing extremist groups calling for a “civil war” and trials currently going on for sedition and a plot to kidnap the governor of Michigan at gunpoint to put her “on trial” for treason because of the state’s Covid protocols, we live in scary times. Most of us think that what’s going on with these kooks is unprecedented. Rachel Maddow’s new podcast shows us otherwise.

ULTRA is a look at right wing American extremist groups in the years leading up to World War II and their plans to overthrow the government, murder government officials and distribute pro-Hitler propaganda throughout the United States. They were in fact able to disseminate said propaganda to millions with the willing aid of members of Congress who were on the take from representatives of the Nazi regime. It’s frightening to see what could have happened and what these fascist sympathizers actually did accomplish. The podcast is a prime example of the adage, “Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.”

Four episodes of the six-part series have dropped so far. It comes out every Tuesday.
