Copie's Choice for the weekend of December 20

Happy Holidays!

Lighten UpI hope that you're having a joyous holiday season.

Just a reminder that my annual standup comedy concert returns to the San Leandro Performing Arts Center this NYE with twelve of the funniest comedians working in SF and LA today.

It's an early show that starts at 7 and ends by 9:30 so that you can be somewhere safe when the clock strikes midnight.

For tickets, call 1-800-838-3006 or go to brownpapertickets.com.

Here's what else I've been into this week.

MOVIE

THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

I went to a press screening of this picture early in the week and I loved it. I understand that some STAR WARS purists aren't fans, but personally, as someone who has seen all nine movies on the big screen when they first came out, I think that SKYWALKER is the perfect coda to the long-running series.

Can you believe it's been 42 years since the first STAR WARS movie came out?

I feel like Methuselah.

IMPEACHMENT: An American History

ImpeachmentIn light of this week's historic impeachment of Donald Trump, I thought it wise to brush up on the subject and how it unfolded the previous times the House of Representatives felt the need to implement it.

IMPEACHMENT: An American History goes in depth on each impeachment as well as the circumstances and mood of the country when it happened. I'm shocked at the similarities between Andrew Johnson and Trump, particularly in their direct, unapologetic appeal to white supremacist voters at a time when the nation is divided and politics are tribal.

The authors are all noted historians and biographers: Jon Meacham, who wrote a great bio on George H.W. Bush a few years back, writes the chapter on Andrew Johnson. Timothy Naftali writes on Nixon and Watergate. Peter Baker goes in depth into the scandal that got Bill Clinton impeached and Jeffrey A. Engel closes out the book with a chapter called ON THE CONSTITUTION AND DONALD TRUMP.

Bottom line, this has all happened before in some fashion and...we survived.
