Copie's Choice for the weekend of January 24

COPIE'S CHOICE

Happy Friday!

I hope that it's been a great week.

I'm FINALLY over the bug I had. It held on for three weeks! Unfortunately, it's going around and it's a strain not covered in this year's flu vaccine (I got the shot).

My advice... wash your hands A LOT.

I'll be performing THE GREAT AMERICAN SH*T SHOW, featuring monologues on life in the Trump era, at the San Leandro Performing Arts Center on Friday January 31.

The show benefits the progressive organizations Swing Left, Flip the West and Indivisible.

Come out, laugh, think and support the preservation of our democracy. Get your tickets HERE.

Here's what I've been up to this week.

BOOK

Furious HoursI read a fascinating book this week called FURIOUS HOURS: MURDER, FRAUD, AND THE LAST TRIAL OF HARPER LEE.

It's common knowledge that Harper Lee's assistance was crucial in the writing of Truman Capote's true crime classic, IN COLD BLOOD. What's less known is that in the late 70s and early 80s, the TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD author had planned her own true crime book.

An African American preacher by the name of Willie Williams had five close relatives die mysterious deaths over a brief period of time. The good reverend had insurance policies on all of them... without their knowledge. The string of suspected murders stopped when Williams was shot dead at a funeral of one of the victims in front of one hundred witnesses.

Harper Lee spent years trying to research and write a book on the story, to be called THE REVEREND.

Part true crime thriller, part biography of the reclusive MOCKINGBIRD author, FURIOUS HOURS is a real page turner that, among other things, explores why Harper Lee never finished another book.

And before you write me, GO SET A WATCHMAN was written first, rejected and stored in a safe deposit box until its eventual publication a few years back.

MOVIE

I saw Best Picture nominee “1917” the other day. I'm usually not a big fan of war pictures, but this one is great.

The story of two English soldiers trying to make their way through German-occupied France to deliver a message that will prevent an allied massacre is gripping, suspenseful and had me on the edge of my seat during the whole ride.

Go see it on the big screen.

EATS

Had a marvelous dinner at THE STINKING ROSE in North Beach this week. If you've never been, it's all about marvelous dishes super enhanced with garlic.

If you like garlic, you'll love The Stinking Rose.

Here's where you can catch me performing in the coming days:
