Happy Super Bowl weekend!
Apologies for no COPIE’S CHOICE last weekend. I have been busier than the proverbial bear in the beehive the last week with performances of NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN, THE SCION, THE GREAT AMERICAN SHIT SHOW, rehearsals and rewrites on my new play, GRANDMA & ME and... prepping the 2019-2020 of THE BEST OF SAN FRANCISCO SOLO SERIES that I produce in both San Leandro and Marin.
Boy, that sure seems like a lot as I write it down. When I’m in the whirlwind, I know I’m busy, but I never really fully realize how much I’m carrying.
I write this from the Southwest terminal at the Oakland Airport as I head to Burbank for tonight’s official opening of GENUINE. Unfortunately, high winds have caused the cancellation of my flight (and several others) and I’m praying that I can get on one to LAX in time to make my 7 PM curtain.
Everything happens for a reason...
I DO have a couple of things I squeezed in the last two weeks to tell you about...
RESTAURANT
I had the pleasure of performing THE SCION last weekend at the Cloverdale Performing Arts Center here in Northern California. It was my second time performing at this beautiful, intimate theater and my first time dining at THE TRADING POST. It’s a cool little restaurant with a “wine country” feel.
I had a grilled trout that was out of this world. A few of my dining companions had a chicken pot pie that looked AMAZING. If you find yourself in the Asti/Cloverdale area, check it out!
The Trading Post is located at 102 South Cloverdale Boulevard in Cloverdale. Reservations are definitely recommended.
GO.
BOOK
As I continue my quest to acquire knowledge in the area of personal productivity, I’ve been reading MY MORNING ROUTINE by Benjamin Spall and Michael Xander. In this book, the authors publish their interviews with CEOs, artists and entrepreneurs who open up about the rituals they practice
as they begin their day. As I learned reading Craig Ballantyne’s THE PERFECT DAY FORMULA, the trick to getting things done is in controlling and planning your mornings before things get hectic and the day takes on a life of its own.
In MY MORNING ROUTINE, that idea is expanded upon to show how practicing certain habits is a critical part of controlling the start of the day. It’s pretty inspirational. Some folks meditate and practice gratitude. Others go right to the gym or for a walk. Others get right to work on the most important thing that they want to accomplish that day.
The idea is not for you to copy somebody else’s routine, but to gather ideas for how to create your own practices that will best get you started for the day.
READ IT.
LISTENING TO
I am a HUGE Weezer fan and was really excited when I heard that their latest, THE TEAL ALBUM, was dropping this week. Gotta tell ya... I was disappointed with it. Rivers Cuomo is one of the most brilliant and original songwriters around... so why the devil did they just release an album of 80s covers?????
Don’t get me wrong. Their versions of Toto’s AFRICA, A-ha’s TAKE ON ME and Michael Jackson’s BILLIE JEAN are great. But I can hear any multitude of bands do this at a bar-mitzvah. I just expect more from a guy talented enough to write PERFECT SITUATION, BEVERLY HILLS and PINK TRIANGLE. Just sayin’.
LOVED the sketch debating Weezer’s early vs. later work that SNL did a few weeks ago. If you’re a Weezer fan, check it out. It’s hilarious!
As for the new album... if you like 80s covers, LISTEN.
PODCAST
Got hooked on a true crime podcast I just discovered called UNSOLVED. It’s produced by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and it investigates unsolved murders in Wisconsin. The third season just began and it’s a look at the 1998 murder of a Catholic priest.
People in his parish either loved or hated Fr. Alfred Kunz. He was a priest who appeared to “walk the walk” when it came to the professed mission of aiding the sick, the poor etc. He was also a priest who believed that the Vatican was “too liberal” and adhered to a philosophy that was far more rigid than the 90s church taught. Even so, it was a shock to find him nearly decapitated in the rectory of his church. The killer has never been found.
