Copie's Choice for the weekend of November 9

Happy Weekend!

COPIE’S CHOICE has been off the grid the last few weeks as I’ve grappled with PG&E’s blackouts.

The power is back and so am I.

THE EDUCATION OF BRETT KAVANAUGH
An Investigation
By Robin Pogrebin and Kate Kelly

Audiobook coverThe Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court confirmation hearings tore the country in two as half (or more) Americans believed the testimony of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford that she was assaulted as a teen by a drunken high school student Kavanaugh. The rest believed the judicial nominee that he never got THAT drunk as a youth and certainly never assaulted anyone.

The FBI was subsequently directed to investigate the claims of Dr. Ford and other accusers from Kavanaugh’s years at Yale.

The investigation was a sham directed by the White House. Several of Kavanaugh’s friends and acquaintances reached out to the FBI with relevant information that was ignored. The FBI didn’t even interview Kavanaugh OR Dr. Ford.

Robin Pogrebin and Kate Kelly of the New York Times conducted the investigation that the FBI didn’t, talking to friends, classmates and drinking buddies of Kavanaugh. It’s a good read.

The conclusion: Kavanaugh got black out drunk frequently in high school and college. He probably did exactly what Dr. Ford says he did and doesn’t remember it. He’s led an exemplary life since then.

The biggest take away is that he clearly and repeatedly lied under oath about his drinking and that alone should disqualify him from sitting on the nation’s higher court.

WATCHING

WATCHMEN

HBO’s reimagination of the classic 80’s WATCHMEN graphic novel series is just marvelous. The show has been called, “the best reason to keep HBO.” I heartily agree!

WATCH.

Doctor SleepMOVIE

DOCTOR SLEEP

Went to a press screening of DOCTOR SLEEP, Stephen King’s sequel to THE SHINING.

Bottom line, if you liked the book or the movie version of THE SHINING, you’ll love DOCTOR SLEEP. If not...

MAYBE.

PODCAST

GANGSTER CAPITALISM
This is the best podcast I’ve heard in ages. It’s an investigation into the Varsity Blues scandal that involved rich people fraudulently buying their children into elite universities. The two highest profile of the bunch are actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin.

The details of the investigation are riveting. This podcast will do two things. It will keep you entertained...and it will thoroughly piss you off.

DEFINITELY LISTEN.

By the way, for those who’ve been asking, I’m back on the hunt for the best burger in the nine Bay Area counties. If you’ve got a place for me to check out, send it and the particular burger you want me to try to me at copie@briancopeland.com.
